An Introduction to Chemical Recycling

Virtual training: 9-10 December 2024 | Start Time: 8:00 AM New York/ 1:00 PM London/ 5:00 PM Dubai

Course Overview

Chemical recycling is an umbrella term for a range of processes that revert waste to an earlier molecular state. Unlike mechanical recycling, chemical recycling alters a material’s fundamental chemical properties.

Chemical recycling can potentially use waste inputs that are challenging or impossible to recycle using traditional methods. It can also create reprocessed material with properties similar to virgin plastic. As a result it is seen as a critical emerging technology that could enhance the circularity of material – especially plastics – significantly increase recycling rates, and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

Despite its potential, the industry faces significant challenges, including scaling up technologies, securing a steady supply of suitable waste, and navigating complex regulatory landscapes. Over the past few years, chemical recycling has gained attention from industry stakeholders, investors, and governments as a critical solution for meeting ambitious recycled content targets, and is seen by many as the only viable solution to meet mass-scale food-contact recycled polyolefins – especially in Europe.

However, the sector is still in its early stages, with ongoing developments in technology, infrastructure, and market dynamics shaping its trajectory.

Key topics include

The Introduction to Chemical Recycling Training Course will cover topics such as:

  • Fundamentals of Chemical Recycling: Understanding key principles, processes, production routes and technologies.
  • Current stage of development: Overview of the state of play for chemical recycling globally, including the global regulatory landscape, and global capacities.
  • Market dynamics and drivers: Exploration of how pricing mechanisms are developing, and pricing drivers, with a case-study focus on Europe pyrolysis oil pricing. The influence of feedstock waste values on the chemical recycling market.
  • Why feedstock matters: Understanding the importance of securing waste supply, its influence on yields, impurities, production costs, and scalability.
  • Future Trends: Insight into upcoming trends, potential new applications, and emerging market opportunities in chemical recycling.
  • Challenges and Limitations: Analyse the key challenges and limitations of scaling up chemical recycling processes, the size of those challenges, and the impact they might have on market development.
  • Opportunities for Growth: Understand the drivers of growth for chemical recycling, explore future planned capacity, and learn which processes are developing most quickly, and why.
