Uhde to build Sorfert Algerie’s $2bn ferts complex

Sun shines on Uhde in AlgeriaMUMBAI (ICIS news)–Sorfert Algerie has awarded engineering firm Uhde a contract for the construction of its new $2bn (€1.36m) fertilizer complex at Arzew on the Mediterranean coast, the German firm said on Monday.

The complex, which is scheduled for completion in 2011, would include two ammonia plants each with 2,200 tonnes/day of capacity and a 3,450 tonne/day urea plant, the company said, with most of the volume slated for export.

Uhde will provide comprehensive licensing, engineering and supply services for the plant, situated some 350km west of Algiers.

The unit would also include numerous offsites and auxiliaries, such as required storage and shipping facilities, the company added.

Sorfert Algerie is a joint venture under the leadership of Orascom Consruction Industries Algerie, a subsidiary of Egypt’s Orascom Construction Industries, and Algerian oil and gas group Sonatrach.
