LONDON (ICIS news)–Saudi Arabian Fertilizer Co’s (SAFCO) number III ammonia plant went down on 12 July due to technical problems and the outage is expected to last around 10 days, a source at Saudi Basic Industries Corp (SABIC) said on Tuesday.

The 500,000 tonne/year ammonia plant in Jubail, Saudi Arabia, also has a 600,000 tonne/year urea plant attached to it. This had also initially gone down but had now restarted using ammonia from stocks, the source said.

The nature of the technical problems affecting the plant were not revealed.

SABIC expected to lose around 15,000 tonnes of ammonia in total during the outage, including the surplus from the plant and stocks being used for urea production, the source added.

The SAFCO III plant has an ammonia surplus of around 150,000 tonnes/year, or 450 tonnes/day.

SAFCO is a subsidiary of SABIC.
