LONDON (ICIS)–Economic growth in the eurozone ground to a halt in the fourth quarter of 2024 with GDP stagnating compared to the previous quarter.

Seasonally adjusted Q4 GDP was at 0.0% in the eurozone and 0.1% in the wider EU, according to official data from statistics agency Eurostat on Thursday.

2024 Q1 Q2 Q3 Q4
Eurozone 0.3 0.2 0.4 0.0
EU 0.3 0.2 0.4 0.1

Growth had remained positive though at relatively low levels in the first nine months of 2024, peaking in Q3 with growth of 0.4% in both blocs.

On a year-on-year basis, Q4 GDP increased by 0.9% in the eurozone and by 1.1% in the EU.

These figures are a preliminary flash estimate which are subject to revision, Eurostat said in its statement.

The agency also updated its economic sentiment indicator which rose slightly in both the eurozone and EU though remained below 100 at 95.3 and 95.8 respectively. A figure below 100 indicates below-average sentiment.

The European Central Bank (ECB) is due to make its latest decision on interest rates later on Thursday amid a climate of rising inflation in the eurozone.
