US chem shares fall amid market sell-off

HOUSTON (ICIS)–Shares of several US-listed chemical companies declined sharply on Monday – with some losses exceeding 6% – as the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell by 2.09%.

Earlier in the day, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down by more than 2.50%.
The declines came as concerns rose about the spread of the Delta variant of the coronavirus.
Lower in oil prices also dragged down shares. The table below shows the performance of crude prices.

Among the US chemical stocks followed by ICIS, the biggest decline was posted by Tronox, a producer of titanium dioxide (TiO2). Its shares fell by nearly 7%.
Kraton, a producer of pine-based chemicals and styrene-block copolymers, fell by more than 6%. Paints and coatings producer Sherwin-Williams was the best performer. Its shares rose by 0.18%.
The declines in the US stock market followed drops in Europe and Asia.
It has been several months since the major indices in the US have posted any swings exceeding 2%.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average had closed below 2% on 29 January.
