SINGAPORE (ICIS)–Solvay more than doubled its Solef polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) production capacity in Changsu, China since mid-May, the Belgian producer said on Monday.
Details on capacity and investments were not disclosed.
“The rapid growth of electric and hybrid vehicles is driving record demand for PVDF,” Solvay said in a statement.
PVDF, a thermoplastic fluoropolymer, is used as a binder and separator coating in lithium-ion batteries.
In February, Solvay announced plans to invest €300m to expand its PVDF capacity in Tavaux, France to 35,000 tonnes/year which would be its largest PVDF production site in Europe.
The increased capacity is scheduled to come online by December 2023.
Solvay expects its sales to the automotive market from its materials business segment to rise from around €800m in 2021 to more than €2.5bn by 2030.
