HOUSTON (ICIS)–The US will delay until 2 April imposing tariffs on Mexican goods that fall under the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), President Donald Trump said on Thursday, 6 March in a post on Truth Social.

Prior to the announcement, tariffs of 25% were set to be imposed on most goods from Mexico and Canada.

“After speaking with President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico, I have agreed that Mexico will not be required to pay tariffs on anything that falls under the USMCA agreement,” Trump said in the social media post.

Trump said this agreement is through 2 April.

Sheinbaum said earlier this week that she would announce her country’s response on Sunday to the tariffs imposed by Trump.

It is unclear what action Mexico will take now that most goods have been exempted through 2 April.

On 5 March, the US granted a one-month tariff exemption for the nation’s automobile industry.
